Motorcycle Coils

I often read about owners having poor spark and starting issues with JD Pony motors often as a result of fault ignition coils. Just wondered if anyone had ever used twin 6 volt coils from a motorcycle to provide spark. I know it wouldnt be original but would be a cheap and potentially reliable source of spark. Im guessing some form of fixing bracket would have to be made and everything wired through existing distributer and condensers. Any thought or experiences would be interesting.

No reason it wouldn't work, I've temporarily used dual output coils from Kohler or Onan two-cylinder engines. (These were on 12 Volt conversions.)

Also, there's all sorts of dual output coils from "waste spark" automotive engines that would work.

Some extremists have used 4 automotive ignition coils, apparently works, but doubles the current through the points.

I've also seen gents use four coils or two dual outputs (like some Onan generators use) like Bob noted and sure it "worked". The late style of replacement pony coils I think are better quality then the old originals and not so problematic. One possible problem of replacement coil or coils is the current the points have to switch may be to much causing premature points burning. Ive never done it but with the newer coils I think some gents are by passing the small ballast resistor originally used on those tractor ignitions. Maybe blksmoke will comment, as I recall he's good on this stuff

I've put a 70's motorcycle coil and electronic ignition onto an old Simplicity with good results. Wanted to do the same on my 9N but didn't have the time, cheaper and quicker to slap a new 12v square coil on........once, if the kids leave the key on again they will be gutting the last coil I kept on the shelf for the MC conversion!
