Starting old diesel

Trying to start a diesel that has not run for years.I bleed out lines.Open a line at injector turn it over and fuel squirts out. Tryed starting fluid and still it does not fire. What do I check next. This is my first try at working on a diesel.

When cranking, are you seeing white vapor out the exhaust?

If no, there is no fuel getting through the injectors. Check the kill solenoid/lever. If it sat in the kill position, it may be stuck there.

Have you checked the valve train? Stuck valves, bent push rods?

Any history? Was it running before?

Once you determine it has compression and is getting fuel, sometimes a pull start will get one going.

I see white smoke when trying to start. There is no kill switch. To kill you shut the throttle down all the way and it dies. This is a italian made engine. I'll chech the valves next. thank you

White smoke usually means fuel IS getting into the cylinders but is to cold to burn.
Cranking speed is KEY.. gotta be spinning pretty fast..
OR use the glow plugs or heater if equipped.
IF we knew what engine we're working with, it'll be MUCH EASIER to diagnose..

Diesels need to develop adequate compression to fire. To get adequate compression takes adequate cranking speed. A diesel will crank all day without starting if the cranking speed is too low. Check your battery and have a strong charger on it.
