JD 410 Loader Bucket Cylinder

I need to put new seals on this cylinder and the parts manual calls the end cap a "nut": it won't come off, however- it turns but does not loosen. Any tricks would be appreciated!

Are you sure its not coming off. if I remember correctly they are really fine threads. just saying.

What vintage 410 are you working on? Twin cylinders for the loader or single?

Single cylinder bucket should have a threaded gland nut.

Twin cylinder models are a little different, the nut holds the cylinder rod guide against a snap ring, that’s why it’s spinning, there’s nothing to keep it from doing so.
Normally you would remove the nut, push the guide into the cylinder bore a little because it keeps the snap ring from popping out, remove the snap ring then pull everything out of the cylinder and do what you need to do, putting it back together is just reverse the procedure.

You might have to put pressure on the cylinder to hold the guide so you can break the nut loose. Be careful out there.

The threaded part is turning with the nut and that is your problem. You need a way to keep the threaded insert from turning
with the nut. Extending the rod all the way out and keeping pressure on it is one way that often works. I usually leave the
hydraulics hooked up and put extend the cylinder all the way out. Then get the nut off.

Thanks- it is a twin cylinder older model. I am not clear on how to hold the guide, Mike, by putting pressure on the cylinder. Maybe put it in a vise around where the snap ring is?
I am glad that you know this issue because I am on Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago in SE Alaska and have no support services.

Yes, it is for sure- the whole assembly can move out a bit with a screwdriver before it hits the snap ring. It threads to the guide not the body of the cylinder and the guide is turning with it.

I used pneumatic pressure to push the piston out and with some tapping the nut came loose. Thanks so much for the advice!
