I have a unknown electric motor that i am wanting to paint. should i use spray paint or should i hand paint it on...

Depending on the motor it would be alright to spray paint it. If it has large ventilation holes you might stuff some paper in the holes to keep the paint out of the inside. Assuming you mean rattle can paint if you would get paint made for wheels it would hold up better.

Haven't heard of wheel paint.

Sounds interesting.

Wonder how it does on aluminum? Not many paints will adhere well to aluminum.

Wheel paint gets harder than regular rattle can paint and would be more durable. Aluminum since it oxidizes you need to clean it with a solvent such as lacquer thinner or acetone. Then use a self etching primer. If you have the means of spraying Dupont Variprime primer would work better. I don't think it's available in rattle can.
