Engine rebuild

I want to rebuild the engine on my tef20 if I buy a brand new crank, con rods, bearings, liners, pistons, rings, cuff rings, thrust washers etc is it just a matter of carefully replacing the parts? the head I will get rebuild at the machinest splitting the tractor and stripping engine of exterior parts then putting it all back together is no problem for me so do you think i'm capable of rebuilding the engine?

Have you ever rebuilt an engine before or watched someone else? Do you know the procedure?
Why would you buy a new crank and rods? They can both be reconditioned. Do you know the
procedure for installing sleeves? Do you know what sleeve and piston protrusion is and how
to check it? Do you know what plastiguage is? Do you know how to check end gap on the rings
and how to properly install them on the pistons. All these things are required for a good
engine rebuild. Do you own a torque wrench and how to use it? If you don't know the answer
to these questions you need to get some help before starting. We rebuild engines for a
living, lots of engines, and we very rarely have a comeback, but we are very particular with
our assembly procedures. If you want a good engine that will last you need to put it
together correctly.

First, there are no new cranks or rods for that engine that I know of. Even if there were, they would be inferior quality import knockoffs.

My suggestion would be to find a reputable rebuilder, let them handle this. They have the experience and equipment.

No matter how many new or reconditioned parts you buy, if it is not correctly assembled, it is all for nothing.

If you do decide to tackle this, get a shop manual first. Study it cover to cover. Ask a lot of questions, take nothing for granted!

It sounds to me like you should be capable. As the others have said, you first select an automotive machine shop, take the crank, block and head to them, and then purchase the parts from them that they tell you you need. They should also answer any questions that you have as you proceed. You can't do any worse than have to tear it back down if there is a problem. Assuming that the rear main seal is a rope seal, do extra research on that part.

The Standard 20c diesel engine is one of the most complicated engines to work on. Do NOT atempt to pick your tools up until you have read a workshop manual THREE TIMES.
Sorry to be like this but the are unnessery dificult to work on for example the crank come out of the rear of the engine and the connecting rods will not come up the cylinder bore and the injecior pump has to be spill timed. Good luck, MJ

I'm going to call a place that rebuilds engine and ask for a quote on how much it'd cost to rebuild the engine if it's only about $3k then I am going to get them to do it would love to do it myself but I don't have the time
