I have a68 case 580 ck having trouble when starting sometimes it does right up and other times it won't start at all. I have noticed that when it starts right up I have compression right if the bat and when it won't start I can tell it doesn't have and compression. Can anyone tell me a way to help get confession thanks

is there any way to help keep the compression. I have heard that if you take the spark plugs out and put a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder it will help to keep our build compression. Is this true. Please help thanks

Putting oil in the cylinders will sometimes raise the compression. But it should not need to be done to an engine that is run on a regular basis, unless the rings are worn severely.

If you suspect the compression is so low the engine won't start, you'll need to run a compression test to determine the problem.

You can buy a compression tester, or "borrow" one from Orileys, Auto Zone, on their loan a tool program.

Pull the plugs, open the throttle and choke (remove the air cleaner connection just to be sure it isn't causing a restriction). Be sure you have a good, fully charged battery and good starter.

Run the compression test, hold or attach the tester to each cylinder, crank the engine through several compression strokes until the gauge stops climbing. Write down the results for each cylinder.

If the compression is good, up around 100+ PSI, and close to the same on all cylinders, the compression is good, and not the reason it is hard to start.

If the compression is low, 90PSI or less, add the teaspoon of oil to each cylinder, run the test again.

Compare the results.

If the compression came up 10-20PSI, the rings are bad.

If no drastic increase, the valves are the problem. Try adjusting the valve lash, repeat the test.

If 2 adjoining cylinders are low, the head gasket is blown between the cylinders.

As mentioned about the air cleaner, be sure it is not restricted. A blocked air inlet can appear as low compression. Check for mouse nests, dirt dobbers, clogged element.

Another indication of leaking rings, or in rare cases an internally leaking head gasket, is heavy smoke puffing from the crankcase breather tube.

Let us know the results.

I appreciate all your info I'll run a compression test tomorrow as u pulled the plugs it's send to be really flooded. How can I keep it from flooding when yelling to start

sorry how can I keep it from flooding. I don't give it any gas and just choke it. And it still floods

Do you turn the fuel off after each use? Could be the carb is flooding while sitting, that would cause it to flood the engine easier.

Try cranking it for a few seconds without choke. If it doesn't start, give it a quick choke, but don't keep the choke on for more that a second.

Some don't like much choke, you will learn the procedure.

well it turns out it was the ignition cool the whole time. However does anyone know anything about a manual shuttle transmission. The clutch pedal is all the way down so I cannot shift it into gear
