Timing fuel injection pump

I removed the fuel injection pump from my 96 Tafe 35di without setting the engine on TDC. I can replace the pump as I have not moved the timing gear on the tractor or the drive on the pump, and move the engine to TDC. To do this, I have to remove the fuel tank so I can loosen the #1 atomizer to find the compression stroke or, remove the front timing cover, (alot of work), to line up the factory timing marks on each gear. The FSM says put the engine at TDC and remove the pump and re-installation instructions say to just line up the dowel with the drive gear. The drive gear stays in the tractor and the pump is aligned to it by way of a dowel pin. I guess what Im asking is, as long as the dowel pin lines up, why does it matter if Im at TDC or not?
BTW, thank you thepumpguysc, he is going to estimate rebuilding my pump.

If the pump will only go on the gear one way, then the engine position doesn't matter.

If it will go one of 2 ways, try it, if wrong take it off and turn it 180*. Won't hurt it if it's wrong, just won't run.

Got to thinking, there may be a procedure to set the exact timing using TDC marks, especially if the pump has elongated mounting slots for adjusting.

Check your manual carefully.

It will only go on one way. The manual says to use the elongated slots to precisely time. There is a scrbe mark on the flange of the pump and one one gear housing. The manual says to line up scribe marks. I took it off without TDC but it seems like since it only goes on ine way, it doesnt matter.

Pumps with the dowel pin for location in the drive hub groove will be in time IF the gear pin enters the hub groove as it should. Did see the pin pushed back once on a 4.236 Perkins gear when the hub was 1/3 turn off..

That's how a lot of folks do it, instead of taking off the pump drive hub.. they'll leave the hub attached to the gear & align the key up & slip it back in the hub, when they get the pump back..
Nothin' wrong with that.. as the saying goes, more than 1 way to skin a cat..
