My mechanic cannot get the glass fuel cup to seal and thinks this is the reason why the tractor is so hard to start. He says the compression is good and there is a spark. The tractor will pop start but only a very young man has the energy to try and try and try starting by the wheel. Any ideas would be appreciated.

A leaking fuel bowl should not cause hard starting, but a new gasket should solve that. If it has a very good spark at the plugs, maybe the carb needs a good cleaning. Ron Mn
Pull start it or belt it up to another tractor to get it started if it hadn't been started in awhile.Check the flange on the sediment casting for pieces of old gasket,or the screen is to big diameter also check the bowl for chips.If you put the bowl on with a new gasket and it don't fill up you got it.It will fill when the needle valve opens up.
My 1935 JD-B is hard to start if I have not started it in a long time but if I clean the points and make sure it has good fire it will pull start in less then 10 feet and then there after as long as I start it once or twice a week it starts like it should. It is one of those things if you let one sit they tend to get hard to start be it hand or electric start

The leaking glass sediment bowl has nothing to do with the starting problem if gas is filling the carburetor. Nothing.
If it has a magneto, make sure the impulse is working and the timing is correct. If everything is up to spec, the tractor should start just by rolling the flywheel forward. No young man's energy needed. It sounds like the magneto impulse isn't working, which is a common problem with these old tractors.
