Farmall M Electrical issues.

I recently made the decision to rewire my tractor, and in the process convert it to 12 volt. However now that I have everything wired up all I get when I try to start it is click, with the occasional arcing noise. Any thoughts on why it won't start? My only thought is it could be the solonoid. If its of any use I've also attached the diagram that I've been using. Except I'm using an internally resisted coil instead of a resistor.

If the solenoid is trying to energize, do some voltage tests while holding the switch to start.

See what you are getting to the starter post. If low, could be a bad connection, or low/bad battery.

If good voltage on the battery side of the solenoid, and low on the starter side, bad solenoid.

If the cables jump and get hot, could be a shorted or jammed starter.

Be careful, it could start cranking any time, be sure it is in neutral and stay clear of moving parts!

The M did not have a solenoid when new but yes some one could have added it. If all you get is a click then try a jumper across the 2 big posts on the solenoid. If it spin over then the solenoid is bad. If it still does not turn over check battery cable connections at the battery the solenoid and ground. If they are all good check that the battery has a full charge as in 12.5 plus volts any thing lower and it needs to be charged

I'm assuming you have the normal push button starter switch - they do go bad and sound like arcing when they do.

I just replaced the solenoid. And still just click. Im pretty frustrated because its a brand new starter, a brand new solenoid, and a brand new battery. The only thing I can think of is a defective starter maybe? Any thoughts?
