what part does the porous plug play in a marvel carb?


Assuming you are referring to the one at the bottom of the carb - I always thought it was to allow liquid gas to drain in the event of flooding. Without draining the liquid fuel it would be much more difficult to start the tractor after flooding.
 
In addition to letting "flood" gasoline drain OUT, it keeps dirt OUT and backfires IN!
