old starters and generators

What's a good way to clean the old gunk and dirt out of gens and starters? I have a few that need cleaning and I don't like the idea of solvents or water. Anything better or just stick to compressed air.

They make a spray electric cleaner for just that type of thing. I have a can of it in my service car

Ever since the electric motor was invented resourceful people have been putting motors that got inadvertently submerged into the kitchen stove to dry them out.

All I've overhauled and any body I worked with washed the parts in solvent, blew it out and flushed with brake clean or water before the brake clean days.

I've always used Safety Clean type solvent, then blow dry with air. Just about have to if it's grease soaked.

Just don't want to get it in the bearings, if equipped, and plan on reusing them.

I knew an electrical engineer that worked at a chemical plant. He
would take good electric motors and put them in an electric oven
at low temp. He claimed this would make motors last longer. He
used a conductivity tester to prove it helped rejuvenate the
insulation on motor.
