John Deere 1020 no hydraulics no pto

I have a 1020 jd that lost its hydraulics when I was
stacking hay. I changed filter cleaned screen witch
was clean and ran test on transmission pump per
manual. No fluid at return line going back to sump.
Checked check valve above filter housing and screen
in front pump. All looks good. Then noticed pto
wasn't working either. Barely turns and when shut off
with pto engaged you can turn it by hand. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm NOT a 1020 expert, but I don't believe the PTO would involve hydraulics, so it sounds like something broke that's in common with the PTO and transmission pump drives, POSSIBLY a splined hub in the clutch pressure plate??????

HOWEVER, there's reverser and PTO options, so it's not going to be a "one fits all" 1020 answer.

Do you have a reverser or independent PTO?

Hyds are run off a front mounted pump and the PTO is run off of a 2 stage clutch so they are not one and the same problem. I would pull the front side panel and make sure the pump drive hub/coupler is good.
As for the PTO that could be a bad clutch or a broken PTO coupler and if it is the coupler well lets just say that is a night mare to fix BTDT and have a 1020 in the shop right now

No the 1020 has a 2 stage clutch and a PTO spline coupler in the transmission area that if it breaks you have to take the transmission apart to replace it

(reply to post at 19:39:46 08/13/17. Iirc the transmission hydraulic pump is driven from the "live" pto. No transmission pump means no oil being supplied to the front high pressure hydraulic pump. No lube oil for transmission bearings either .
Is the loader equipped with it's own controls which are properly supplied from a T in the supply line to the SCV . And the loader oil returned to a ported transmission filter cover .
Loaders , log splitters and hydraulic motors and other high volume loads don't work worth a darn when connected to the rear SCV outlets on a factory stock Dubuque/Mannheim.

Ok I know the one I have in the shop has the 2 stage clutch and a lever to kick the PTO which is a hand control not hyd

Loader has its own controls
and pressure is tapped off of
side of transmission housing
like my other john john deere
are. Return goes into filter
housing. I'm beginning to
think it's the clutch or
something gear wise that
involves trans pump and pto.
With pto engaged you can turn
By hand. It is two stage
clutch pto engaged on left by
lever . In or out. Didn't
realize at first pto was
involved. Hardly use this
tractor with pto. Manly use
it for loader.

Well shut off the PTO can be turned by hand if it is an Independent PTO model. Do you have a lever between the gear shifters that turns your PTO on and off??? IF your tractor does then it has a hydraulic clutch for the PTO. It is common for them to break the steel lines that come up to the gear shift housing where the control valve is. Then the transmission charge pump flow is dumped back into the transmission through the broken line. Also a blown o-ring in the clutch pack can cause the same thing.

Also you say you checked the transmission pump per the manual. What did you do and what manual are you referring to??? Any leak in the charge pump/transmission circuit should show up IF your checking the pressure correctly.

Repairing the PTO clutch lines or pack require a split between the clutch housing and the transmission. Getting it back together with all the lines and O-rings sealing is a fun job at the best of times.

I have started refusing to repair any JD Mannheim derived utility tractors with hydraulic problems. You can spend lots of money/time and still not have them work correctly.
