magneto problems on Case sc

I have a 1949 Case sc with a Fairbanks Morse megneto that still wont spark. I took it to a tractor store to have it looked at and they replaced the cap on it because they found the copper ring inside was loose. After setting the timing on the fly wheel, I put it back on the tractor and it wouldnt start. it appeared to be not sparking. So I took it back to the tractor parts store and they bench tested it for spark and said it looked fine. I put it back on the tractor and it still wont start. We took it off and hooked a wire and plug to it and manually snapped it around and got 1 or 2 tiny sparks and that was it. im at a loss as to why it still wont work. any help would be appreciated, thanks

With the points open/on a high side of the cam (you may have to turn it backwards to make that happen) clean them with electrical contact cleaner spray and allow it to air dry before putting the cap back on and checking for spark or trying to start the tractor.

Like it or not, by FAR the most likely cause of your problem is the points not making good contact.

If you use this tractor much spend the money and find yourself a Case mag or a Delco distributor conversion. I never could get my SC to start and run right with a Fairbanks mag. I tried three of them over a period of years. When one of them conked out one time I borrowed a Case mag to get me by and the tractor ran fine on the Case mag. In the end I finally put a Delco distributor conversion on it and it has purred like a kitten ever since.
