Okay John Deere guys, what happened here?

Okay, I"m a little stumped. I got my JD60 running. Then when I was doing some other work, I tried to start it and it would not start. I looked down and the
whole dang distributor was spinning! In the attached pic, the distributor is about 180 degrees off. So I'm wondering a few questions. First, if it ran fine,
what would cause this? Just coming loose from the mounting bolts? Secondly, how do I fix this so it doesn't happen again. The last owner said "it just quit me"
but I don't know if this was ever his issue. (Honestly I highly doubt it) Anyway...advise? Thanks and much appreciated. Carl

Distributer shaft bushings must be about seized!

Better remove the thing and take it apart for a cleaning and overhaul
 
The hold down might just be to loose or the distributor shaft bushings maybe going bad or if it has an oilier some one has not oiled it in a very long time. Any one or a combo of all could be causing that
 
You'll need to pull the distributor out, see if it turns freely.

Could be a seized shaft, or something inside locking it up.

Lucky it spun instead of breaking something!
 
Okay so a lot of you guys are saying or hinting that the shaft has seized up. I'm assuming that might have been why the engine seem to be turning sluggishly the last time I tried to start it. I was thinking it was just my battery draining but I'm assuming if the shaft seized up that would cause it to turn over very slow also. So now I assume I just loosen the holding bolts and pull it out right?
 
Yes, it disconnects like a mag with a slotted drive.

Before pulling it, note position of rotor.

Also, before removing it, remove the breaker plate and check for something out of place or debris in the advance area, or for a too-long screw holding the points or condenser to the breaker plate that's snagged the advance mechanism.
 
As Bob say but if it has a timing mark I would get it at TDC with the timing mark then pull the distributor. Of course once you have it fixed you will have to re-time it but if it is already at TDC your ahead of the problem of timing it
