How to free a rusted/gelled transmission?

I bought a shaw duall R-6, a project tractor that hasn't been used in decades. The transmission is all gelled up. I was able to loosen up the shift forks, but I can't get the gears to slide. Any tips?

I wouldn't call it Gell I would call it thickened oil fortified with water and rust. There is no substitute for a thorough cleaning. A citrus solvent type of cleaner would work best. Most likely all of the bearings will need to be replaced. and any bearing surfaces may need to be machined if they are significantly pitted.

Yea I mean it's really sticky, makes your fingers stick. When I drug it home the thing was locked even with the clutch disengaged, about halfway home the it finally broke free. I bet that was the gears being stuck even while in neutral

try an engine cleaning wand. flop the suction hose in yer favorite cleaner and chuck it up to an air line. diesel fuel would be the cheapest solvent. heres a link
