Hello, I have a friend that has a Ford 5000 that he believes is a 1965 to 1969 model year. He parked it a few years ago as the steering quit on him. I have done a small amount of research and have been told it is unfix-able as the hydraulically assisted steering pot was crap? A few years ago I had issues with my wonderful Cockshutt 1850 and was walked through the repairs on this site. I'm hoping for the same thing again... :D When it stopped, he said he could turn approximatly 15 degrees in either direction no matter how much he turned the wheel. I can't start it to confirm, as the tractor has developed a leak in the fuel tank...I'll have to repair that if I get the go ahead from from some helpful person here. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated...thank you

He is asking $2,000 Canadian, he is worried that I will buy it and spend too much money fixing it or worse, not be able to fix it at all.

I suppose I should also mention that the 5000 has a very good, solid FEL and an aftermarket heavy duty 3pt hitch, he had just replaced all the tire just previous to the steering problems.

I have a friend who has a Ford 5000. The original steering quit many years ago, and another neighbor who was a retired IH engineer, installed a hydraulic steering valve on it. It steered as good as new, and he was able to hide the added parts under the original sheet metal. It couldn't have been a real expensive fix because my friend pinches his money pretty tightly. He used a steering valve on the order of the one that Tim used in pictures 1 and 2 of the link below.

If a man made it, a man can fix it. Those were pretty good tractors, you could even
go to a manual steering if you want the exercise. Ben

My '73 Ford 5550 backhoe had the steering go south, all that was wrong was a snap ring locating a valve spool had broken. You need to pull the steering column to get to it, but if you're handy it's no big deal. Mark the hoses as to which one goes to which port, easy to mix up.

The steering cylinder and control valve are one unit in the front booster on early 5000's.
We rebuilt the one on my 67 5000 last year, most of the problem was the linkage pins where worn allowing to much movement for the control valve to shift in and out properly, the tapered pin that holds the cylinder to the steering arm was worn the worst, a little welding and grinding fixed that.
It is possible for the cylinder barrel to be messed up but a good hydraulic shop can get the proper size barrel material and make a new barrel and a machine shop can make a new piston.
67-68 models had the 57 hp 233 engine, 69 had the larger 62 hp 256 engine.

To bad it's so far away, for $2000 even if it cost to much to fix I'd buy it for parts and tires.

Hello, thanks for all your help, I learnt that there may have been some mechanical damage done, side loading, bending some stuff and I decided against buying the tractor. The information that you provided will be passed along to the owner so he may be able to get his tractor rolling again. I found a 1977/78 Belarus with it's own issues and I will be looking for help again soon...Thanks again
