Sealing a wooden corn sheller

I have a 4 hole sandwich corn sheller that is made of wood. What should I use to preserve the wood? Thanks, Mark.

That could vary a lot depending on the appearance you want and supplies available to you. For the wood to show and not spraying the finish I would probably use an oil based polyurethane. If you have the means of spraying lacquer would be easier but a conversion varnish would be more durable. If paint is desired I would use an oil based enamel if brushing it. A better finish would be a pigmented conversion varnish but that needs to be sprayed. You could also use an automotive urethane however that requires an air supplied respirator to spray it.

When you say preserve the wood, does it mean the wood is aged or is it new? If its aged and beginning to deteriorate then there wood savers/converters. Minwax makes one called Wood Hardener. If the woods in good shape is it something your using or just displaying. If using it use a water based polyurethane and let it cure properly. If its just a display piece any good quality paint and primer or wood preservative.

Preserving the wood could just mean preventing it from deteriorating which could be used with new wood.

Mark just isn't giving the entire picture. It's unknown the condition or the intended use. If the sheller is going to be left outdoors then polyurethane wouldn't be the right finish. Under that circumstance a marine grade spar varnish would be a better finish.
