B-275 smokey

I have a IH B-275 diesel. The previous owners ran it dry and ever since then it chugs a lot of black smoke out when it's running(even at an idle. The head gasket has been replaced, and as of this past week the injectors have been replaced. I don't run it too much per fear of washing the cylinders. Any advice or help. The exhaust is all black and you can smell the raw diesel in it.

Is it an early B-275 with the CAV inline injection pump and air-governor? If so, check the butterfly throttle valve in the air
intake-manifold. Make it is not plugged with insect nests.

You say it was "run dry." What was run dry; the engine oil-sump or the injection-pump oil sump?

Run dry meaning the engine was run completely out of fuel.

I am ivor from UK and I used to work at IH dealer in the 70's and the 275 finished in 1967.have you changed fuel filter and has oil been changed in air filter bowl also is the pre cleaner clear and the intake into the filter

I forgot to ask what fuel are you using... agricultural or road diesel
when you changed head gasket what did you set valve clearance to
is the engine breathing?

It is breathing I believe. I am using off road diesel. The fellow before me changed the head gasket. I am attaching some images of something I noticed today. How can I find out the year?

That s an early B275 with the CAV inline pump and air-governor. Make sure you keep oil in that injection pump. I see your's
still has the original dipstick. That tractor is a 1958 to 1960 vintage. Certainly not a 1976. If it is smoking black it
either has too much fuel or too little air. I doubt it has too much fuel unless someone has fooled with the delivery
adjustments under the lifter-cover on the side of the pump. I would suspect an obstruction around the carburetor-like shutter
valve inside the intake-manifold air-tube. Mine has gotten plugged twice by mud wasps and when it did - my B275 blew black
smoke like crazy whenever I revved it up.

I see you still have those old one-volt glow-plugs. Next time they burn out, I suggest you use the new 12 volt plugs that
Bosch makes for your engine. They make a huge difference in starting an durability.

If you look close you can see the fine-mesh window-screen I had to wrap around my air intake to keep the mud-wasps from
getting in and plugging it up.

there is something odd about the photo it shows an inline pump which means it is an early tractor but it has a key start starter motor rather than push down lever and this was fitted towards end of production also number 4 injector pipe looks odd the pipe has been repaired and it looks to be bigger diameter also number 4 delivery valve is smaller , there looks to be fuel leaking from the return pipe so could there be some sort of restriction in the return system preventing fuel returning. I see that number one injector is different to the others I am not trying to pick faults with your tractor at all. the B275 engine and B414 engine were not long lasting engines compared to other tractors like David Brown and dexta

It still has the pull down lever for starter it is just disconnected and replaced with a key start. All the injectors looked like number one but I replaced three of the four in an attempt to hunt down a bad injector. I am waiting on the last injector to arrive. The previous owner sold it to me for 800$ so I figured it was worth the tinker.

I have a key start on mine too, even though the old starter lever is still there. RE the injectors - hopefully you are just
putting in new nozzle tips and not complete injectors. It sounds like you have never just tested them?

I have the same engine in diesel and gas versions. Both have been fine. $800 for a tractor with a diesel engine, live
hydraulics, live PTO, and a dual-range transmission is a steal. That tractor will outwork most Fords sold the same time.

I got whole new injectors. I had redone the lower part of the injectors but it didn't help so I bought new ones. I am curious are the injectors tuned when they come in the mail or is that something that needs to be done in house. Yes hydrolics and PTO are working beautifully.

The intake is completely clear the valves are set to .020 when hot. New injectors... I am about to check the pump timing. Any other tips.
