IH 826 with D358-how to prime oil pump

Just replaced rod and main bearings. Oil pump replaced about 150-200 hrs ago. Can't get oil pressure. How do I prime the pump or check to see if it's working?

One old trick was to pack the oil pump full of Vaseline(take it apart to pack it)

I think that pump hangs in the oil pan, so not likely is is a priming problem.

You can try taking the oil pressure gauge/light sending unit out of the oil galley, crank the engine, (be ready to shut it off) should gush oil. If no oil, the pump is not pumping for whatever reason. Could be locked up, shaft twisted,???.

If there is oil flow, but no pressure, there is an internal leak, not building pressure. Could be improper bearing clearance, missing galley plug, stuck open relief valve.

My oil pump is external. Will pumping oil into the sending unit opening prime the pump? Will it hurt to overfill the oil?

FYI-
Borrowed a pressurized oil tank from my IH dealer,
plugged into block where oil sending went, put
about 30 psi on tank, when all oil was in engine
cranked and had oil pressure of 50 psi in about 3-
4seconds. I am so happy. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It's a good feeling when something you think might be complex and involved turns out to be simple. I have an oil pressurizing tank I made ten years ago that I have used only twice but it was a real life saver when I did need it.
