should running in oil be used in a overhauled engine

soon I am going to overhaul our dexta engine and I have never used running in oil before after an overhaul and I have asked around and I got mixed replies, I remember when I worked at main IH dealer 40 years ago that oil in new tractors needed changing after 25 hours

It can't hurt. With the lack of zinc in the new oils a break-in oil will help the cam and lifters seat if they have been replaced. I'm no chemist, but that's what I have read.

Years ago we would run a engine on non detergent oil for the first 25 hours or so then change to what ever oil we where going to use in it.
Now days we start with the oil we're going to run in the engine and add a bottle of zinc additive. We do first oil change on automobiles at 500 miles, tractors at 50 hours, small engines at 25 hours.
Built a fresh Cummines engine for my pickup last year, it has stronger valve springs than stock for the exhaust brake so it gets zinc additive every oil change.
Last couple a tractor engines we rebuilt had to have cam and lifters replaced so now tractors also get zinc additive.

Weather you start off with break in oil or regular engine oil make sure to follow proper cam break in procedures and add a bottle of zinc additive.
