I just bought a 420 and its missing the model and serial number tag. Is there any where on the tractor that it's stamped on or how do I figure out what the serial number is? I read online to get the stamped block number on the front of the engine and the dealer could look it up is this correct?

I did that with a John Deere 40. The block number is hand stamped on the right side of the engine, up forward somewhere around the hydraulic pump. This possibly can give you an approximate date of manufacture. It's only the number of the engine. How long the engine remained in storage before being used is anybody's guess. Somewhere, I saw a chart on the net that someone had made and it gave sort of a cross reference between the block numbers and the tractor numbers. I don't know how accurate this chart is. Maybe a dealer will be able to help you, maybe not.
