John Deere 420 Alternator Belt Tension Bracket Idea

Here is a shot of the alternator I've installed on my JD 420S. The generator was missing when I bought the tractor so I decided to go ahead and modernize to 12V and an alternator. I used a hardware 5/16" turnbuckle for the belt tensioner. I had to bend the eye of the bolt about 90 degrees to clear the fan. But I think it will work great!

Not to criticize but a Dubuque two cylinder starts just fine on 6V. An alternator on a two cylinder also looks butt ugly. Electrical components from this shop are top quality and reasonable in price .

This is a great way to make a new member feel welcome. His innovation and fabrication skills were right on and to all of us that like " Butt Ugly " I would like to thank him for sharing.

The intention was not to insult the fellow or his workmanship. It's just that an alternator looks butt ugly on a two cylinder .

I'm fairly thick-skinned when the "correct police" show up. So no worries. If I gave you a wide shot photo and a walk around, you'd see why a "butt-ugly" alternator is the least of this old girl's issues. She's still a farm mule. Ain't no trailer queen yet. Hopefully I'll have her cultivating peas before summer is out.

I definitely agree. For my trailer queens, I
do it right. You shoukd see the 60LP Im
working on and my '51 A. But for a farm mule,
those little generators just ain't enough.

You do not have the correct width pulley on the alternator, it is too narrow, use the one off generator if you can.
