generator ground

Just reading about polarizing the replacement generator. (I have just installed a used 12 volt Delco ); It is mentioned that polarizing was neccessary BUT BE CAREFUL of the grounding of the generator one has an internal grounding, the other has an out side or external grounding.
WHAT is the method of telling the difference between each type?
Thank you for your assistance.

There are 2 types of field circuitry, A and B.

Delco generators are type A, externally grounded field. That means to make the generator charge, the field terminal is grounded.

Autolite generators are type B, internally grounded field. That means to make the generator charge, the field is connected to the non-grounded circuit.

To polarize a type A, spark a jumper from the non-grounded side of the battery to the A terminal of the generator.

To polarize a type B generator, disconnect the field wire from the generator, spark a jumper from the non-grounded side of the battery to the F post of the generator, reconnect the field wire.

Since yours is a Delco, it is a type A. If it were neither Delco or Autolite, it would be necessary to look inside the generator to see what type it is, or do some research to determine it's internal wiring.
Type A and B Generators.

Good info from Steve, as I best "recall" NO WARRANTY some of the old Fords and some Massey Harris were Class B while Deere and IHC and Oliver and AC were Class A. AND OF COURSE YOU CANT INTERCHANE AND NEED THE CORRECT A OR B VR

If its a Class A the Field windings start at the A terminal (or third brush if a 3 brush genny) pass through the two field windings, then exit at the insulated F post. On a Class B the Field windings terminate on an internal case ground.

Thank you for all your instruction and help.
Now I can polarize the genie to positive ground which really makes no difference to the tractor but at least I can say it ""looks better"" ha ha!
At least I now Know! how to properly charge" polarize the Genny
Thank you again
