Engine stalling out after idling just fine.

I bought a 55' massey harris 33 from a guy. My first tractor. It will pop right off when i start it and run for a few minutes. Then it just stalls right out unless im on the choke right away. Ive gotta hold the choke or it will die. Then it dies anyway after less than a minute on full choke. It will start back up on full choke a couple times but then that wont evwn work. After sitting for awhile it will always start. Am i looking at having to rebuild the carb or adjusting something?

Try popping the lid off the gas tank. May be creating a vacuum. Also pull the drain on the carb and see if you get a steady stream of gas. If you don't, you have a line blockage. Lastly pill carb apart and clean it well.

What you have is a feul restriction. Over a few minutes it fill the bowl in the carb and it uses up that fuel faster than the bowl can be refilled. First place I would look is to take off the sediment glass bulb turn fuel on and see what kind of fuel flow you have coming out of the tank. If you have good flow then I would put the sediment glass bowl back on then disconnect the fuel line at the carb and check fuel flow coming out of the fuel line. If that's good then you'll have to pull the carburetor apart. Make sure you have a kit or new gaskets to install in the carburetor.

I would start by checking the spark just to be sure it is a good blue/white that will jump a 1/4 inch gap. Some times a spark problem will do what your is doing.
Then pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes. If you do not have that work your way back to the tank to see where it gets lost.

If you have a good gas flow check the air cleaner and make sure it is not full of water and mud.
Then take the air cleaner tube off and fire it up while holding your hand over the air intake. You should both feel and good suction and get gas on your hand. As soon as it tries to fire up take your hand off and then if it tries to die put your hand back on just long enough to make it run and doing that some times can fix the problem

I would really check out your fuel tank for crud or the glass bowl if you have one.
I had this problem with my Case Sc and drove me nuts until I realized what was happening.
The crud will allow a slow flow of fuel but when the tractors running it will eventually stop.
Then after sitting as you describe the fuel replenishes the carb. Then it starts great until the poor flow doesn't keep up.
Clean the tank and or bowl if needed.
You can also put a standpipe in the tank to avoid the crud.

Check the fuel system. We have a 3020 gas that was doing the same thing. The fix for us was 1qt of diesel fuel for 10 gallons of gas. Runs real nice now.
