12 volt generator

I have set up a 12 volt generator and regulator ( not an alternator)
I started the wiring re work over two years ago designing the new wiring loom from scratch.
now I have the harness in place ( due to stress burn out affect) I can't remember which wire goes to which terminal. In the harness from a 4 position key switch at the panel to the generator there is a red, black and white wire. on the regulator are 3 terminals and a ground terminal.
Which of the red and black wires go where. on the generator are two terminals ""A"" and ""F""
Hopping I am right in connecting ""A"" and ""F"" to the regulator just can't place the red and black from the wiring harness at the generator/ regulator end. This is frustrating when I started this new harness over two years ago I knew exactly what wire was for what; my memory won't pick up the right answer now.
Thank you for your assistance

1. What model tractor do you have

2. What are the 4 positions on your switch. Are there post markings on back of switch?

3. What are the terminal positions on the regulator? Is there a terminal on the underneath side?

4. Does your starter activate with a mechanical switch or an electric solenoid?

5. Yes, A to A and F to F from regulator to generator

6. Unless one has a factory original wiring diagram that may have given wire colors, the wire color on your switch could be irrelevant.

finally I have a opportunity to reply to your questions
On the pannel red to the + on the meter black to the light switch
On the regulator : Bat Which I have hooked to the red lead from the amp meter then on to the run switch on the 4 position starter switch and to the battery
: F to the F post of the Generator
: That leaves :The L terminal on the regulator
: The A terminal on the Generator
; the black lead from the light switch
This is the quandry where does the black lead go? the L terminal the A
lug? are the A lug and the L terminal tied together ?
Thank you Wm.

Bat on regulator to one side of ammeter, other side of ammeter to big battery cable at the starter solenoid or switch. With ignition and/or lights on, engine not running....if ammeter swings negative it is right, if it goes positive switch connections on ammeter

F on regulator to F on generator
A on regulator to A on generator
L on regulator is your light and ignition switch source. It feeds power to the light and ignition switches

If you power the ignition switch from ammeter it goes on generator, not battery side

Dear r Virgil_ks
Thank you again for your directions. As I wright the information down this morning it appears I have made a wrong connetion on the amp meter by connecting the red line to the feed to the switch as well. So I will alter the connections so that the red line from the regulator noted as battery only goes to the + side of the meter then from the other side of the meter to the battery post of the starter solenoid and re route the black lead from the load terminal of rat regulator to the starter switch and the light switch.
The reason I have installed a key switch and solenoid to isolate the starter from the battery is for protection since I live on a camp grounds where other people might accidentally try to start the tractor with out my knowledge. I have also removed the hand crank and kepted it locked it away.
I am working on an IHC BN 1946 Late year ( September) It was my father's he had worked for IHC near Sarnia Ontario when IHC was testing hydraulics. I have totally rebuilt the tractor/ still need to install the rings and rad some time this year.
Thank you again for your assistance
