Ferguson TO20 steering locked up

I have had a 1951 Ferguson TO20 for 20 years and it has worked just fine, but a new problem has emerged. The steering started to get harder -- that is, the steering wheel was progressively harder and harder to turn, although at some steering wheel positions, it was easier. Now it is locked up and centered. There's some backlash, but I can definitely feel it hitting something solid on either side of the backlash. I removed both of the adjusting screws on either side of the housing, with no effect. It seems obvious that I shall have to disassemble the steering housing, but before I do, I want to ask two questions:

1. Is there some simple repair that doesn't require disassembling the steering housing?
2. Is it likely that the problem is so serious that an amateur like me will get in over his head? Should I find a local tractor mechanic?

Before you take it apart, jack up the front end, do some turning and watching. Be sure the problem is in the gear and not a frozen spindle.

Most likely though, it is going to be in the gear. It is a simple design, nothing real difficult. A shop manual would be a worthwhile investment.
