John Deere 430 tractor

I have a old 50s model John Deere 430 tractor. Ive ordered a new steering wheel from this site. Problem is I cant get the old one off. Ive used a wheel puller and it just broke the plastic off the wheel. So I wound up cutting the metal handle parts off with a grinder. Question is, Is this supposed to slide off with the center nut being removed or is it threaded on. Its been on the tractor for about 30+ years. Thanks. Any help is apprecitated.

Never seen one threaded on, probably splined or keyed. If you can wait for the new one, you can see how it is made.

Now that you are down to just the hub, if you can get to it with the grinder, split the hub on one side. Then drive a screwdriver or chisel into the cut to spread it, should come off. If you can't grind it, drill a series of holes, wallow the holes until they connect.

Most likely just heavily rusted from pooling water around the hub.

Thanks, thats an idea. I appreciate it. I dont want to accidently hit the threads with grinder but I guess I could put some more nuts on it to protect the threads huh? Thanks

According to parts manual available on JD site, the 430 steering wheel uses a woodruff key. One is shown in parts breakdown, but part # list states 2 used.

The key according to what I looked at us under the part Im trying to take off. Im getting a good wheel puller this afternoon. I sprayed down with PB Blast lastnight. Hopefully she will come off. Any other recommendations other than cutting off? Maybe heat??

It will be a 1959 or 1960.
Which model just out of curriosity?
Too bad the collar and keyway from the steering shaft to the steering box input shaft does not stay as tight as the steering wheel.
Parts book is free on the JD web site, i can't find the direct link at the moment , sorry.
