Anyone that can tell me if or why the PTO will not engage in high speed. Tractor is between a 1965-1967. The person I purchased from never used it in high so he wasn't sure if it was meant to or not. I have not been able to locate any documentation on whether it should rngage or high speed or not. Any insight out there would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

If you mean the Hi-Lo range nothing I read says the PTO won't work in the Hi range. But I have never run anything off the PTO in Hi range. It seems like that would be pretty fast travel speeds to mow or plow. What are you running that needs to move that fast?
Here is an image from the owners manual on my 1967 424

Oh and if you get the serial number off the tractor over on the left side of the YT page there is a link for Serial Numbers to identify your year.

I am ivor from uk and I used to work at IH dealer 40 years ago and I remember there was a lever by footbrake pedals that could change speed of pto with 434 but not all tractors had this but all tractors had groove in casting for this fitting

Your tractor has a heavy duty single stage clutch witch will only drive in the low range of the gearbox. This is the gearbox used for heavy duty applications and the only way to get round this problem is to fit a complete back end from a livedrive tractor. MJ

I had a 424 once and the pto would run in the high range. But it was too fast for for implements to handle. I only used it in the low setting.
