Clutch or Transmission Problem???

I have a 1972 Oliver 1265. While plowing I hit a large buried stone which stopped the tractor dead in its tracks. The tractor made a whining / grinding noise. I put in the clutch, backed up, cleared the rock and finished the pass. As I was driving back for another pass the tractor made the same noise and stopped moving. I put the clutch in and released it. the tractor moved about two feet and stopped again.

I can change in to and out of all gears (hi and low) but when the clutch is released the tractor doesn't move. Anybody have any ideas.

Hard to say. I've had clutches go out all at once with no warning. I disced all day with my 2-135 one time, stopped and unhooked, got to the road, stopped for traffic and when I let the pedal up to go,it wouldn't move. I mean AT ALL. Wouldn't even creep in low gear.

That said, that 1265 had a whole different kind of clutch in it. It doesn't run against the flywheel. There's a self contained unit that bolts to the flywheel. It's a pressure plate and clutch all in one. Something could have blown apart I suppose. I put a rebuilt in my 1365 last summer. That one didn't actually come to a stop,it just started slipping and got weaker over the course of a few months.

tgrenier, it sounds far more like the clutch disk came apart rather than a transmission problem. Pull the clutch inspection cover and take a look. I'll bet you find pieces in the bottom of the housing.

Not to sound completely ignorant but...where is the inspection cover? I assume toward the front of the transmission on the side of the tractor by the clutch pedal????

This is my first tractor plus being a "city boy" I'm trying to learn as I go.

Look just ahead of the brake pedals. There should be a cover with two bolts in it. I'm 99% sure you won't be able to see if there's anything laying in the bottom. Not sure you'll see much at all,but if you have somebody push the clutch pedal down, you might be able to see if the facing is gone off the clutch plate. The way that clutch/pressure plate unit is made,I wouldn't count on seeing much.

Do look in there. Also does your PTO run? There are also 2 adjustments on those clutches. Do you have a book so you can check them? You have an e-mail address or a phone number?

I have the owners manual but that doesn't tell me a whole lot. I assume there is a website to buy a repair manual. Does anyone know where that site might be?

You can try Rick Stair at Ricksagparts dot com or Danny Bowes at importtractorparts dot net. They both specialize in those import tractors. That clutch unit wasn't even something that I wanted to mess with myself. I split the tractor and took it out,but I took the unit to Clutch Dynamics in Lansing Michigan and let them handle it. Mine was worn in too bad to rebuild. They got me a new pressure plate unit and built a new clutch for me about as cheap as anybody around. And when I say cheap,I'm still talking over $600.

It does sound like the clutch. I would also see if you have a shear bolt in the plow. My plow has a shear bolt in the front for that reason. I have hit a couple of large rocks with my tractor just under the surface and I heard a pop and found my plow had sheared the bolt to avoid damage to the tractor. I just flag the spot an put in another shear bolt.
