Ford 641 workmaster 1957

I have an electronic ignition I am going to have put on my tractor and I have someone who should be able to rebuild my carburetor fairly cheaply, but he was concerned that some of the parts might be so old that they might be hard to get apart with out breaking. So I thought maybe I might just replace it. I see some for sale for only around $150. It runs OK, but is sometimes hard to start and sometimes floods. I am hoping it might run better and could use a little more horse power since I often run a old circle sawmill with it. so I am interested in an upgrade if there is such a thing. I see (Part No: 312954) for $170 says that it fits 641 tractors after 1958, but I think my tractor is a 1957. I see that (Part No: 13878)a Zenith for $287 says it fits 641 and says it outperforms the original, but it does not list any particular years. I emailed Yesterdays tractors twice about what carburetor would work, but did not get an answer. Does anyone have any advice about rebuild, verses replace verses upgrade or forget about it. and if upgrade or replace with what?

Thanks

Dave

I have never had any problems getting anything in any of these carbs apart. Just get the kit and go at it. The best old tractor carb rebuilders in the world are right here and will guide you through it. No need to replace unless something is broken. YT has parts but no service. the advice is strictly from the forum members.

Keep the factory carb if at all possible!

The replacement carbs are generic fit-alls, which means you probably will have to modify or fabricate the throttle lever to make the governor work properly.

The old carbs are simple, designed for field repair. Unless something is broken or missing, real good chance it will work just fine.

Also be sure the gas tank is clean, the sediment bowl screen is clean and in place, the fuel line is in good condition and routed properly, the tank is vented, and the air filter wire mesh element is clean. Look at the position of the throttle with the engine off, and the dash lever set to fast. It should be in the wide open position. If not, the governor is not properly adjusted.

Any promise of performance improvement with a different carb will be minimal. A carb will only work as well as the rest of the engine. If the ignition system is not up to par, or the compression is down, it will still be lacking in power. Has the valve lash been set lately?

thanks for the advice. I will try a rebuild kit. I am not sure about the valve lash not sure what that is. I am not much of a mechanic. I had a guy who has been helping me out around here adjust the carb recently. Other than that it has probably not been adjusted in 30 years. I will print the replies off to show him next time he is out here.

Thanks

Dave
