Oliver 1850 PTO Adjustment

Anyone have any tips for adjusting the PTO clutch on an Oliver 1850? No matter whether I set mine up tight or loose the PTO shaft continues to spin. I have the operator's and the service manuals. It's a right hand lever and is supposed to be set to require 58 to 64 pounds of pull on the PTO lever to engage the PTO. I tried that with no success.

I had it working OK for a short time but then it started to drag again. Could it be that transmission oil it too thick?

The plates could be warped. Those things don't stop turning worth a darned no matter what you do to them.

Thanks! That's not very encouraging. It looks like the PTO unit on the 1850 is much harder to overhaul than the ones on the smaller Ollie's because of all you had to do to get the unit out. I had a 1655 before and still have a 770. Those units are easy to work on. According to the repair manual getting the unit out of the 1850 is a much bigger deal.

Have you ever had one out?

Thanks again!

No,I never had mine apart. It runs on,but I just live with it. I shut it off to hook on to things. As long as it's something that turns hard,it's OK. Something like an empty manure spreader can be a problem. Mine seems to stop easier if the RPMs are up a little more.

Yep! That's exactly what mine does with my spreader. How does yours behave with a baler? I sure hate to think I couldn't shut that off without killing the engine every time!

Thanks again!
