Lucas cav fuel pump on perkins diesel problems

I have a 1974 Massey Ferguson 135 with a Perkins Diesel.. Not too long ago the Cav pump starting leaking on the rectangular seal. I replaced it and put it back together and that stopped the leak. Ever since then when I crank the tractor it will only run for about 10 or 15 seconds then it shuts down..If I Crack the top bleed screw on the pump it will run perfect and forever but of course leaking fuel...I have bleed and bleed the lines and even put new fuEl lines from the tank to the lift pump and to filter from lift pump. Could I have put something together wrong in the pump to cause this?? Please help!!

Three things to check, the cam operated supply pump, make sure it works. They can sometimes have one of the two check valves inside get out of place. There's a constant bleed orifice fitting on top of the filter base, could be straight fitting or banjo bolt type. Has a small line usually hooked into the top injector return line. The orifice can get plugged, it's job is to bleed any trapped air out of the base so the air doesn't get to the injection pump, killing the engine. Also if NAPA/WIX fuel filter is used make sure the filter top outer groove does not have an O ring in the groove by mistake, that's the filter inlet passage.

Everything worked fine until I changed the seal on the pump..That's why I thought it had to be something to do with the pump...I will check the things you mentioned though...thanks so much

By the rectangular seal, do you mean the injection pump top cover O-ring? If so, did you make sure you got the shut off and throttle mechanism lined back up properly?

The leak was perhaps doing what the return line was supposed to be doing; when you fixed the leak, you no longer had return flow.

That is what I was thinking. Running it with the bleeder open is releasing the pressure?
