installing sleeves

What is your favorite lube to use on sleeves "O" rings when installing them. We do put the sleeves in the refrigerator, but need to "lube" the "O" rings.

Why would you put wet sleeves in the refrigerator? Wet sleeves should be able to drop all the way down and rotate 360? by hand without the O rings. If you can not turn them like that you do not have the bottom bore clean enough.

There is a product made by Dupont called Super-O-Lube, specifically for the installation of seals and O-rings, the advantage being it is compatible with all O-ring and seal materials. Be careful, depending on the type of material used to make the O-ring some lubes can be detrimental to the O-ring.

Thank you for all the suggestions. We have the bore clean enough to eat off of. Bore is smooth. Old trick with Oliver, put them in the freezer to shrink. They will not go in if not cold. Also thought if cold the "O" rings may shrink too.

Liquid pipe dope. Not only lubes them, but seals them up if there are any pits in the block too.

Unless you were working on a 6 cylinder 99 Oliver the other Oliver engines are wet sleeve and will almost fall into place, Your block needs to be cleaner! You can spin them in the block without the O-rings if the block is clean!

LOL. Reminds me of the guy who came to ultrasound the steam engine. He kept a bottle of it down in the door pocket of his SUV and uses it for ultrasounding. He said he got in huge trouble when his wife found it there. He said it's been several years and he's still not sure she really believes him.

The freezing of wet sleeves comes from people not understanding the difference between wet and dry sleeves because they are both called sleeves. I doubt that any Oliver dealer froze wet sleeves. Not having the bottom properly prepared is a good way to slice some of the O ring off.

More than likely the word clean is the incorrect word. I have had the bottom bore shinny clean and still be tight. My guess it is from oxidation of the area. The O rings will compress and seal fine if you can turn them 360? without O rings.

My wife kept a small bottle of stuff in her night stand that I bet you could use to install dry sleeves without freezing. Not sure you would even need a press. :)^D

I use ivory liquid.

The most important thing is the block is CLEAN and rust free where o rings fit.

The other green tractor company sells a pricey jar of o-ring lube for sleeves. Even approved on RedPowerMagazine forum.

I never used anything else but just liquid soap, it works fine and does no damage to the O rings.
Wet sleeves need not to be frozen before installing.
