main gear shaft

1949 8N stuck in gear. Do you have to split the tractor front and rear to remove the mainshaft and or the countershaft.

You mite want to post a bit more info on how this situation came about.

If it was a good running/driving tractor one moment then became "stuck in gear" I'd want a little more info before "breaking" it. YAMMV!

On the other hand, you mite as well go for a head gasket replacement and break a bolt or two, and the block, while you're at it.

JUST kidding, been "one of those days", but you would do well to do some diagnosis before plunging blindly ahead as some do.

Thanks for reply. Tractor got stuck in 2 gears while thoughtlessly shifting on the fly. Examined the gears closely today and the main shaft 2nd gear has teeth broken, at least 2. I understand that when replacing it, you must also replace the 2nd gear on the countershaft. Have the tractor split at front and rear at present. How expensive is it to make the repair or I can get a swap transmission locally for $350. Not sure which way to go at this point. Any advice?
