TE-20 Ferguson electrical problem

I have a TE-20 Ferguson that has an electrical problem. When I try to start it the amp gauge goes discharge. And I have to jump start it.

How much does the amp gauge go discharge. With everything operating correctly, and a distributor ignition, it would be normal for amp gauge to go to about 4 amps negative as this is the amount of current the ignition system will draw from the battery until the charging system is activated.

If you have to jump start it, some of the main suspects would be bad/weak/discharged battery or bad battery cables or connections. Check both cable's connections at both ends. Clean, bright, and tight.

Once it's running and the RPMs up, does the gauge go to the + side?

If not, it is not charging.

What kind of charging system?

Still have the generator or has it been converted to an alternator?

If converted, what brand alternator, and how are the wires configured?

If it does show to be charging, check all the battery connections, especially where the ground strap connects to the sheet metal. That is a trouble spot. If all looks good, have the battery load tested.
