Hi

I am looking for some help, i have just got my first old tractor project, and i am looking for the best manual that will tell me how to do engine timing and fuel pump spill timing.

There are so many manuals out there and i am not sure what one is the best.

thanks in advance
Steven

I am ivor from uk and I am in the middle of overhauling a TEF20 for someone and I have been lucky to borrow a genuine dealers workshop manual it is not quite straight forward to do as the bigends are bigger than the cylinder also there are cuffrings on top of the liners which I have made a tool to remove them also the crank has to be lifted out of back of engine i am assuming your tractor has the Standard engine

Hi Ivor yes its a standard engine, I am getting a second hand engine from someone and its been overhauled a few years ago, but I am putting my own fuel pump onto it. I have been looking online and they say your timing has to be perfect or the tractor will be hard to start when cold. Can you tell me when I would get a good manual for doing this.

The Standard engine was known to be hard starting cold, even when new. Spill timing an inline pump needs the number one delivery valve removed so fuel flows from the outlet. As the plunger rises with the rack in the run position, just as the plunger closes the port and fuel stops flowing is beginning of injection. Most engines run between 20-25 degrees BTDC, but use the correct spec from the service manual. If you have access to an MF 1150 or 1155 V-8 Perkins it has a good example of spill timing.
