8n ford stuck in 2nd gear

I have an 8n ford stuck in gear, I believe 2nd, removed starter to get to flywheel. Flywheel will not turn clockwise or counterwise with a crowbar. Used the John Smith method but can't get it to free up the gears. Any help would be appreciated.

Will the engine turn with the clutch held down?

If it will, the problem is in the transmission. If not, it's the engine, or something jamming the fly wheel. Even if the transmission is locked, the engine should turn just a little in either direction as there is some slack in the gears.

Symptoms of the transmission being stuck in 2 gears are, the shifter will not move normally, the engine will still run, but die as soon as the clutch is released, and the tractor will not roll even with the clutch held down.

If you think the transmission is in 2 gears, using the John Smith method, with the cover off the transmission, look at the shift gate in the 3rd picture. All the slots should be aligned. If not, use a large screwdriver to pry the gates into line.

One thing I did not see in the instructions was, if the tractor is parked on an incline, or the transmission is under any load, the gates will be very difficult to move, and once it does release, the tractor will begin to roll! If you can't rock the tractor by pushing forward or backward on the wheel, it is in a bind, be careful!

Thanks for the reply. Transmission symptoms you describe above are what I have. Engine starts fine but dies when clutch is let out. Have studies the picture you are referring to and using a long screwdriver has not budged any of the gears or gates. Even used a pry bar but no luck. Was careful not to use BRUTE force. Any more suggestions I might try? We have tried rocking the tractor, and also jacking up a rear wheel. Nothing has helped.

About all I can suggest is looking carefully into the transmission for anything broken or out of place.

Strange that none of the shifters will move...

There is an "N" series forum below, might post there for someone with more specific experience.

Here is a link to the pix of my transmission 2nd gear. 2nd gear gets most use, wear out first. Don't bother fixing the tranny just fine a donor tractor and swap. Change input bearing, seal and pull the hydro pump and clean out the sludge. Change the relief valve in the hydro pump. Tractor should be ready for another 70 years of service. Takes about 3 hours total if your good. More time in cleaning parts than wrenching.
