IH 560 started hard and runs rough after rollover accident.

I have an old 1959 560 that is tired, but ran well. While digging dirt with it, I managed to roll it over 3 times down the slope I was on, landing upright but with one wheel just off the ground about 3 inches. She continued to run at low throttle for over an hour after the accident until it coughed and died..out of gas. When paramedics arrived about 30 minute after that, one of them ensured the ignition was shut off before I was hauled away. (they are all volunteer farmer folks here).
After I spent a couple months of healing, I finally tried to get it started and fixed. I noticed nothing seriously broken..Seat, steering wheel and a bracket that the steering column mounts to.
I put gas in it but it refused to start. It was getting gas and spark. I pulled the plugs and cleaned and regapped. they were a bit black, but not fouled. I resorted to a few shots of ether before she stumbled to life. She idles fine now, but is lacking power and coughs hard on acceleration now. I have tried readjusting the Carb and timing. They are where they should be, ,but no change. Any suggestions??

Good grief your lucky that tractor didn't
kill you.Sounds like carb needs to be taken
apart and cleaned/rebuilt.May be internal
engine damage from rolling/lack of oil.Hard
to diagnose from a distance.Glad your ok.

Thanks for the help. Yes im very lucky. Only broke my ankle, leg, pelvis in 4 places, broke 6 ribs and punctured a lung. I was back walking unassisted in a month. And only a couple hundred dollars to get the tractor running. I rebuilt the carb about 6 months ago. I will pull her off again and go through it.

Douglase6,Great idea ,I would not even get back that tractor if I were you.Give thanks to the Lord that you are even here.

I second the suggestion that some crud was shaken loose. It's good you survived and are able to get around.

Thank God you're still alive and able to ask about your problems with the tractor.

I notice that the older I get, the braver (stupider?) I get. I mow places now that I would have never tried to mow 30 years ago.

One of these days you'll read about me in the papers.

Thank God you survived this incident. I don't know what else to say. . .

I agree, the entire time it took to roll was only seconds but it was funny how many times I replayed my dads advice in my head. I heard ever since I was small about the dangers of a loader on a narrow front tractor....and of course I knew better. Funny how a full load of dirt and a slight slope, combined with a small Gopher mound can change your life.

Wow. Glad you are ok. I'm sure the tractor will be ok too in time. If you don't mind me asking, did you have a choice of jumping clear of it? If not exactly what 'got you'?

The 560 is one of those old tractors you crawl into..not onto..it has a wrap around seat, a TA on the left side and PTO on the other...there is no room to jump. The tractor was at about a 45degree angle before i was finally able to wiggle free and jump...and even then it was straight down in the path of the tractor. I started scrabling the second i hit the ground. I was able to get my chest clear of the path before the rear wheel rolled across my pelvis and upper leg. The seat broke my ankle. The 3point arm is what got my ribs. Funny how a person can see all that stuff clear as a bell and in slow motion as it happened.

Amazing. I guess you just get a little too comfy and then all of a sudden you wish you hadn't. Could have had a bad ending.

Yes sir. Needless to say, im getting her tuned up and ready to sell. Then finding a tractor with a roll bar atleast.

Just a thought, check the manifold for cracks and broken bolts. Rolling it, the muffler could move things around on the manifold.

I'm very glad your recovery is going well!

Your tractor probably has a lot of roll-over damage to the sheet metal, radiator, steering, seat, fenders, intake and exhaust, etc. So long as it starts and runs, no matter how rough, that is enough for most buyers to assess the condition of the rest of the tractor. I would not think you can change it's value much if any by getting it to run smoother. A 560 gas in good condition only brings $2,500 to $3,000. One that has extensive damage will be lucky to bring much over salvage value. I would cut my losses and sell it as-is.

I agree, but i was lucky enough to have all the tin work off of it. I was giving it a good cleaning and preparing to do some rewiring. The loader was on it and that protected most all of it. Il get her put back together and try to fix the stumbling carb. It I get $3000 out of her I will be happy with that.

That's what I was thinking - the manifold isn't tight against the head anymore (or is cracked). Along with the crud being shaken loose in the gas tank.

Even with the injuries you sound like you were extremely lucky.
