How difficult is it to change a leaking rear seal on a 1947 TO20? What parts would I need to order to do the job? Thanks for any help. Jack

Welcome Jack!

Are you asking about the rear engine seal, or the PTO?

The PTO is simple, just unbolt the flange, pull the shaft, replace the seal. Parking the tractor with the front down will lessen the oil loss.

The rear engine seal is much more involved, as in splitting the tractor.

A successful rear seal replacement is dependent on why the seal is leaking. Proper installation is quite a procedure, as this engine uses a rope seal. The seal must be packed into the groove and the ends trimmed precisely to get a good seal.

If the engine is in good shape, as in recently rebuilt with new main bearings, and everything was properly fitted, chances are the seal was not properly installed, and a new seal will fix the leak.

But if the engine is tired, has main bearing wear, leaking rings causing blow-by, a new seal will likely be a failure.

How bad is it leaking? Unless it is really pouring out, you may want to live with it. There is a drain hole in the bottom of the bell housing, be sure it stays clear. Be sure the oil is not over full or contaminated with fuel. Might try running the oil toward the lower end of the dip stick instead of on the full mark. Cleaning the crankcase vent tube can also help. Also be sure the leak is really from the rear main, not running down from above.

Buying a shop manual will be a valuable investment, will more than pay for itself in mistakes not made! This site sells aftermarket parts, Ebay is a good source of used original parts. My experience has been to get it apart first, determine what you need and order once.
