JD 40C waterpump

I am in process of rebuilding my JD 40C engine and I have two engines that I am combining parts. One engine has a water pump and the other engine does not have a water pump. Was the pump an added feature on later models or was it left off for some unknown reason? Any input would be helpful. The engine without the pump has the cutout spot but has a plate made to go over it. Thanks

I don't have much experience with that series, but looking at the parts catalog there's no waterpump (or cover, or provision there for) shown.

You are cross breeding a 420/430 and the 40 engine. Do you have the parts books ?
The 420 and 430 engines varied on locations of oil filler etc. The 40 engine was smaller displacement and less power.
40 manifolds will not work on the 420/430 heads.
How is the starter fastened to the engine with the water pump. Block numbers ? Should be a serial number on the bel housing.

just posted a picture of the pump that was on one my running JD40c crawler but not on the other one that is the one I am redoing.....since it was not on it in the frirst place do I need to add it? Have not checked the parts manual to see if it is even listed....maybe both engines were off a 420...now I am confused...appreciate the feedback and comments....thanks
