JD 60 flywheel removal

Okay, this really can't be that hard, but I don't wanna screw something up; mainly the crankshaft end. I can't seem to get my starter unbolted from its linkage
behind the flywheel; the linkage turns instead of the nut loosening. So I'm afraid I'm gonna have to pull the flywheel off which I don't wanna do but--- Anyway,
I got the tightening bolts out of the flywheel, but I'm not sure what to do with this 'nut' looking washer on the end. (see picture) Someone told me it screws on,
but I didn't really see any threads on the crankshaft anywhere. So does it unscrew? If so which way? Or do I just pry it off? And what do I do with the roll
pin that's under it when I get it off? Thanks.

Unless someone's got a secret to removing stubborn starters....

That's simply a threaded, RH, stamped steel nut, used to snug up the crankshaft endplay before tightening the flywheel bolts.

Typically, it's then staked down into one of the crankshaft splines.

Easy to remove, simply unscrew it like any RH thread nut.

That being said, if the flywheel is tight on the crankshaft and endplay is reasonable I'd only remove it as a last resort.

NOT sure what's going on with the starter linkage, and I don't remember EXACTLY who it's set up, it's been a LONG time since I removed the starter on one of those. Gonna have to go grab a shop manual and take a look!

The small roll pin is just used to engage the hand start with steering wheel option, it never has to be removed.

It helps to find the spot where the nut is staked into a spline and wedge it out as much as you can with a small screwdriver or chisel. Use large channel locks or socket if you have one that big. Looks like the upper one of the left side is the stake.

I would NOT pull that flywheel off to remove the starter. Let sleeping dogs lie. There's gotta be a better plan. The starter linkage is a small battle by comparison of what could go wrong. I encourage you to look that linkage over again.

Yeah, I totally agree PJH. There's gotta be a better way. I'll have to look at it again. Someone also related I may be able to get at it through one of the flywheel holes also. I'm thinking some liquid wrench, patience, and prayer. :^/

Good luck Carl - I think you'll get the linkage loose.

That flywheel has to be tight on the crankshaft. If it's allowed to move it will destroy the spline and make an expensive repair.

I'm with PJH, there's no absolute reason to remove the flywheel.

Unless something has been changed it should be just a cotter pin holding the round headed pin in the yoke. You may have to clean it up to see it. Take the cotter pin out, push the yoke pin out and you can remove the starter rod.

When you take the starter be careful, that thing is heavy!

Yeah thanks. The more I think about it
and the more I read the more I'm gonna
have to find a way to get it out without
removing the starter.
