piston to cyl. sleeve crearance

well i dont know if there is an offical spec. there , but i can tell ya .002 min. with cast pistons .005 would be fine ,.010 would be a sloppy limit & may
need file fit rings , cast pistons like a little more clearance , your biggest thing is to make sure the cyl. bore is straight , them old engines arent
to picky. just rebuilt an engine for a 30 regular didnt even measure the bore because theres no new liners around for them anyway, just honed cyls to
break glaze, new rings - stuck em back in runs great , them old engines run forever . some Deere 2 cyls run up to .010 clearance from new . wondering why
your asking? there cant be any new parts around for them engines , is there ? If you do have to much clearance you may be able to find a machine shop
that can knurl the pistons , thats the old way of doing things , if you do knurl pistons you just put them in and they'll wear to fit ( cyl. must be
straight to do this thow ) , sounds crazy but thats the way the old timers did it back then. may be able to help more if we know why your asking? hope

it a long shot but i will check & see if any of my 1950,s F.M. machine shop manuals list that engine for you though
 
Depends if you are talking about machining
limits or wear limits? Rule of thumb for
machining would be .001 per inch of bore.
Wear limits will be quite a bit over that,
as much as double. Thus would be for an
overhaul that will have same life as new
bore. As the other poster said you can get
away with a lot on an old tractor engine
that see little or light duty use. I was
just in a 5 1/4 bore allis engine that was
running with no knocks or noise and the bore
is worn .050 at the top, LOL
 
My Brother-in-law had to replace the block in his 2236 due to a crack somewhere in the block that would seep antifreeze when sitting, not when working! Couldn't stop the seep. Luckily, He did find a NOS block and a set of NOS pistons. The machine shop needed to know what clearance he wanted. We couldn't find any answer in the factory "overhaul" manuals so that is why the request went out. We have found that o.004" to 0.005" is a good figure. That has come from YT and the IHC Archive Tech group. We have set the new engine up at 0.005". Thanks for all your assistance!
