can a badly cracked engine be repaired successfully

ivor from UK here and I have been talking to a self employed mechanic who is having difficulty finding a replacement engine to replace a badly frost damaged engine the crack is about 5 inches long and is bulging he says it cannot be repaired I have not seen damage but can this sort of damage be repaired successfully

If you just can't get a replacement engine about all you could do is use a lock and stitch method of repairing the crack. Should be done professionally though.

If it was a rare Bugatti block or something it would be repaired but if any replacement is available probably replaced.

Well yeh..for enough money and with a good(I said good!) machine shop.

I've had spun-out main bearing webs welded back..cracked blocks repaired...rods re-sized...custom rod bushings machined etc.

However quality machine/welding re-furb work of this caliber may be worth more than the machine being repaired.

Easier possibly and almost surely cheaper if a replacement block could be found...or a entire engine fresh or remannable

Ivor,
the simple answer is yes . I have an oliver engine in the
shop with 15 inches of crack ( hard water ) to repair. I have put
large pieces of block in before . then I used irontite plugs,
but you have to be careful with those as you can bow the block.
The lock n stitch tend to pull the crack together rather than
wedge it apart. If done carefully ,it will be nearly impossible
to tell where it is repaired. Grind off smooth and hit with a
needle scaler and it will look like original cast iron.
Lock n stitch comes with a CD for how to do it. When ordering
you need to tell the how thick the cast is as there are different
lengths for thickness .

If it is just the water Jacket it can be repaired by grinding a vee in the crack and filling with JB Weld, two coats, let set up between coats.

I've heard of a small block chev having both ends of the crack drilled to prevent the crack from spreading then tapped for fine threaded plugs to close up the holes and JB welded in between. I was told it worked well. But I assume it was in the water jacket.
