Once again I am in need of help I am currently working on a JD 40 I purchased a couple months ago The tractor is running rough I have had the carburetor rebuilt by Yesterdays Tractor, all new wires plug, points, condenser rotor and cap. set the timing adjusted the valves and it stills runs rough. It is most noticeable at full throttle. it seems to be popping or back firing not loud but with the muffler off I can see fire coming from the manifold Where do I go from here

Thanks Jerry

If you post this on the John Deere forum you will get several responses. I'd open up the main jet in the bottom of the carb some. sound like it's too lean.

Thanks for the advice I have moved the post
I have tried the load adjustment but didn't seem to help The carburetor has just been rebuilt so it should be good inside

Fire and popping out the exhaust usually indicates ignition problems.

Check the distributor shaft for wear, check the centrifugal advance to be sure it is free and working. It's very common to get bad points or condenser these days.

Do you have a coil you could swap from something else?

Did all look well while you were adjusting the valves? No broken springs, bent pushrods, rusty stems, etc?
