ford 2000 transmission leak

Hi guys! I'm new here. I have been reading here and elsewhere about the cotter pin in the bottom of the transmission. My tractor is a 69' 2000. It leaks pretty bad when the tractor gets hot. I've been told to replace the front trans. seal. That's a hell of a lot of work. Is this necessary, or should I keep on catching the oil and putting it back? Thanks!
 
Not good to catch that oil and put it back since it is likely to pick up dust and sand etc which will cause wear on parts. As for where the oil comes from it could be the engine rear main seal or the transmission seal but either one should be replaced if they get very bad
 
Thanks guys! The clutch is still strong. I'm just trying to decide if it is worth the trouble to break down my tractor if not absolutely necessary. I also read that this is normal to leak transmission oil from the cotter pin to keep it off the clutch. Thanks again!
 

The hole is there so that fluids that get into the clutch housing have a place to drain out, be it motor oil, trans oil or water.
Oil leaking from the drain hole is not normal, it is a indicator of a problem that needs looked into and repaired.

Back in the spring the clutch was sticking on the 5000 I had recently purchased, the drain hole had oil around it and it would leave a oil spot on the ground the size of a silver dollar when parked over night.
When we split the tractor we found the trans input seal leaking and the clutch disc soaked in oil. We replaced the seal and clutch, after 200+ hours of hay work and brush hogging there's no oil leaking from the clutch housing and the clutch is working fine.
Pulled my 4500 in the shop this fall, it had been setting a couple years with a stuck clutch, finally getting around to fixing the old tractor up.
When we split it water and oil poured out of the clutch housing, the drain hole had stopped up, we unstopped the hole, replaced the trans seal and clutch. Still working on other issues but have had it running and the clutch works fine.
 
Again it is one of those if you get say a cup for every 100 hour you run it well not much of a problem but if you get a gallon in 10 hours or less you got your self a super big problem that need some TLC
