Hi, I have a question for you, I have a jonh deer 420 1950 and I have a probleme with it. It starts but after a little While, it's stops, I think it's the carburator, (a little arm that connect with the air cleaner seems to move ) Do you know about this problem?

Thank you

Is it all green straight steer with the four speed, a straight steer with yellow and green or slant steer yellow and green ? It is either a 56,57 or 58.
Odds are some sort of dirt is floating in the fuel tank, bunged fuel bowl filter, bunged fuel bowl or something that is limiting fuel flow.

The M was built from 1946 till 1952, The MT from 48 till 52. The 40 series started in 1952
and made till 1956. Then the first series or all green 420 with the steering wheel placed
at a right angle the dash. The 57 series 2 420 had the green hood with a yellow panel and
the slant wheel 420 was built in 1958 then the 430 series came next. My years may be off
somewhat.

Hi, Im not sure about it, my grandfather rebuilt the dozer with 2 dozers. It has 5 speeds and my paper work says model 420 and 1950 for the year...
The fuel tank and the sediment bowl are clean...

Do you think I need to take my carburator appart to clean it?

Thanks again

When this problem comes up,I always ask the same question. Does it have an inline fuel filter?

Trouble shoot first instead of random guessing. Take the carb's fuel bowl off and measure how long it takes to drain a gallon of fuel from the tank through the entire fuel system into a bucket below the carb.

I dont know the year of dozer, how can I find out?

I postes some pictures, look where my finger is pointing, the little arm moves just before the engin stops.

I suspect the rod movement you see is the weights retracting in the governor as the engine dies. If it's truly the original carb it will also have a screen in the elbow connecting the fuel line to the side of the carb.

Ok, so what can I do to solve the probleme? Should I take apart the carburator and try to clean it?

Shut the fuel off at the sediment bowl and take the line apart at the elbow and remove it from the carb. As I said it originally had a strainer, but, may have been removed over the years. You can find a complete parts break down for your tractor here " John Deere - Parts Catalog"
jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.<...
Search the John Deere parts catalog by model 420, equipment, or catalog number 505 (420, 430 Tractors) .

Test the flow first instead of guessing , tearing everything apart and still not solving the problem.

Ok how much time for 1 gallon? The flow looks good...

It's from before the carburator, when I emptied the fuel tank, it took 10min for 5 galons and the flow looks steady...

Thanks for your help

That ain't no good. The carburator was not tested.
Now take the fuel bowl off and measure the flow of gasoline .

Do you mean about the fuel bowl under the carburator?

Yes, measure the flow of fuel through the carburator by taking the fuel bowl off and performing the flow test. This will prove if there are or are not restrictions between the carb fuel inlet and the float's needle valve.
