Transmission/PTO tinging noise

Hi all,

I've got a John Deere 1010 that I just got running, and the transmission is doing some weird stuff. If in 1st gear or reverse, the transmission makes a tinging noise, once every rotation. It isn't jumpy at all when I drive it, it just makes the tinging noise. It sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft, directly under the PTO activation switch. I also cannot turn the PTO off. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong and how big a repair fixing that would be? Also is it safe to continue using the tractor with that issue?

About the best way to fix that is to remove the radiator cap and then drive a new tractor under that cap. Most any thing you ever do to a 1010 will cost you 3 times more then it does for any other tractor. Now if you can find used parts that may help but JD if they have the part it will cost you big time.

That all said I have the rear end and transmission fro ma 1010 I'd sell

I have another 1010 i've been using for parts and it has a complete, working transmission, but the rest is in bad shape so I don't want to put the engine on that one. So getting the parts isn't an issue at this point. I'm just wondering how much disassembly this will take.

Well if you do not have it get the I-T manual for it. Sorry do not know where the one I have is or I would give you the number for that manual
