Truck axle question?

It was leaking gear lube where the axle bolts to the hub, and the inner seal was also bad.

My question - what kind of gasket do they usually use between the axle flange and the hub? The thing that was in there was made out of thin aluminum, and smeared up with a blue silicone on all sides. It looks like regular gasket material would seal it up better. I'd think that piece of aluminum would give it two chances to leak, instead of one. What do you guys use here?

PJH,Get some Permatex? High Temperature Anaerobic Flange Sealant and lightly apply to each (cleaned with like brake cleaner) surface, forget the thin aluminum ring. Then just bolt the axle back up and torque the bolts to specs.
Anaerobic Flange Sealant

I'm pretty sure the Sterling rear axle in my Ford has an O-Ring that seals it, been a while since I had it apart.

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna try what Den said. I don't like that aluminum thing.
