Ferguson TO30 Oil Pump

I have installed a rebuild kit for the oil pump on a Continental Z129 engine in a Ferguson TO30. My problem is the new gears are rubbing on the cover plate to the extent the drive gear cannot be turned by hand. If I change to a bit thicker gasket it turns freely.
Will my pump create proper oil pressure if I used a thicker gasket?

That is how you set the clearance, by adding to the gasket thickness.

There is a spec for the proper clearance, but don't have it here with me. I can see if I can find it at the shop tomorrow. It is a critical clearance, you can make shims out of note book paper, keep stacking them until the clearance is right.

Looking at the shop manual, it says it originally came with a lead gasket(?) that is .007" thick.

It doesn't say what the clearance is supposed to be, but for sure it should not be binding when tightened up.

Is there any other reason the gears could be binding? Are the bushings fully seated? Everything clean and debured?

Whatever came with the rebuild kit, I assume new gears, is aftermarket. Aftermarket parts have a reputation for not being exactly right. You can add some shims, or send the parts back, try another brand, or try a complete new or rebuilt pump. Again, you will get aftermarket, no guarantee it will be any better.

There is also a shim between the pump and the front main cap. That is where the gear backlash is set, should be .005-.010" backlash between the gears. One other point of interest, those pumps have a reputation for the key coming out of the driven gear shaft. Be sure everything in that area is assembled correctly and no wear.
