MH 101 SR won't go into reverse

After letting MH 101SR set too long, trans was stuck in neutral, was finally able to get into all forward gears with some finesse, but cannot get into reverse. I see posts on additives to get engines unstuck. Are there any additives or techniques to get into reverse w/o tearing the trans apart?

is the MH 101 SR a Muirhill 101 and I hope you don't think I am cheeky but would you consider selling it??

If it will run, drive around til the transmission warms up and then shut it off and try it.
Those transmissions have an oil pump in them that circulates the oil a bit, mostly to the belt pulley gears.

i know there is MuirHill 101 but I did not know there is Massey Harris 101 until I looked on youtube so I have made a mistake

Thanks, Richard, I let it idle quite a while and turned on the PTO and only drove it a short distance. Will try more tomorrow.

Let us know what happens. You might pour a gallon of diesel in the tranny to help clean things up.

I drove the Massey around as you suggested, Richard, and it went into Reverse, on the first try after about 300 yards. Works well now. Thanks for the tip. Regarding adding the diesel to the tranny, am I right in understanding that I should do that before changing trans oil then run it a while with the diesel, then change it?

Right Derwen1959, this is a Massey Harris 101 SR. I was not aware of Muirhill, I should have given a more complete description. Sorry for any confusion. Good luck in finding a Muirhill!

It won't hurt a thing. If you just drive it around till the transmission warms up and pull the drain and let it drain for 24 hours and then pour a couple of gallons of diesel in to flush a little more out, it will most likely be OK.
If the tranny is completely full, I would not add diesel to it in case it might start leaking out your rear seals. Just drain and wait and pour a couple of gallons through it to finish flushing it.
Glad you got it going into reverse. They are great old tractors. I pulled my sawmill for years with one.
Wish I had kept it.

Richard, I tried to email you, but it did not seem to go through. Since our last exchange, the Massey quit running. We put in a carb kit today and cleaned gunk out of the fuel line and it is running better than ever. I changed the transmission oil years ago and recall a fill-level plug, don't remember where it is and can't find it. Can you help. Also, do you know the fluid capacity of the transmission.
I used to use it a lot in the woods, don't do much of that any more. Was planning to sell it, but it is so much fun to get running again, I am having second thoughts. I looked at newer small tractors and their cost has made me change my mind.
Thanks.

I really don't remember where the fill plug is. Should be pretty obvious around the back end of the tractor. I am sending you an email message to see if it gets through.
I looked online and found places to buy manuals for the tractor.
I will get back to you later.
Richard
